The UK
The UK is reliant on international markets for their energy. Ireland imports 100% of its oil and more than 95% of its gas. In 2004 the UK became a net importer of natural gas and in 2006 it became a net importer of oil.
World instability
Europe is heavily reliant on imported oil and gas. As a result, it has been affected by world events such as the 2011 conflicts in Libya and the 2009 Ukrainian/Russia gas dispute. In January 2012, Europe adopted an ‘unprecedented’ oil embargo against Iran, immediately pushing up prices.
The geothermal solution
Geothermal energy can solve security-of-supply issues.
- Geothermal energy is an indigenous supply of sustainable energy
- Geothermal can meet 4,000 times the earth’s energy demand
- Once harnessed, geothermal energy is available 24/7, 365 days a year
Did you know?
Europe hosts just 3.5% of the world’s proven coal reserves, less than 2% of its gas and less than 1% of the world’s oil.
